General Physician and Endocrinologist

Professor Lee Kennedy  BSc MBChB, MD, PhD, FRCP (Edin), FRCP (Lon), FRACP.

Prof Lee Kennedy

Professor Lee Kennedy is a specialist General Physician and Endocrinologist who commenced private consulting at The Elms in October 2013. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Edinburgh and achieved the post-graduate degree of Doctor of Medicine for his research into thyroid auto-immune disease. His post-graduate specialty training took him to the Universities of Cambridge and Sheffield, culminating in the completion of his PhD in thyroid growth and development. Professor Kennedy holds Fellowships in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and of London, as well as Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He consults at The Elms once a month on Thursdays, and has particular research interests in thyroid disease, obesity, diabetes, vascular disease and the use of information technology in medicine. He has held various senior positions, including Professor of Medicine at James Cook University, Queensland, Professor of Medicine at Deakin University and Barwon Health in Geelong, and Head of the Medical School at Deakin University, Geelong. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Health at Deakin University.

Cardiologist

Dr John Zhu  MBBS, PhD, FRACP.

Dr John Zhu

Dr John Zhu is a specialist Cardiologist who has been consulting privately at The Elms since February 2015. He attained his undergraduate medical qualification at Nanjing Medical University in China and completed a PhD in cardiology, also at Nanjing Medical University. Dr Zhu then underwent further specialist training in general and interventional cardiology in Hong Kong, Germany and Australia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians with expertise in cardiac interventions such as performing stress tests, angiograms and the insertion of coronary stents. He also manages a broad range of general cardiac conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, pacemakers and arrhythmias. Dr Zhu holds clinical appointments at Ballarat Health Services (Ballarat Hospital) and the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, as well as consulting privately. Patients can have their cardiac tests and procedures performed in Ballarat or Melbourne. Dr Zhu consults at The Elms once a month on Saturday mornings, as well as providing an echocardiography (heart ultrasound) service on-site in the clinic.

Vascular Surgeon

Dr Michael Wu  BPharm, BMBS, FRACS (Vascular).

Mr Michael Wu

Dr Michael Wu is a specialist Vascular Surgeon who has been consulting at The Elms since April 2018. He is a graduate of the Flinders University Medical School in South Australia, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His particular areas of expertise include treatment of peripheral vascular disease, open and endovascular varicose vein surgery, carotid artery disease, aneurysm repair, angiography, angioplasty, arterial stent insertion, and diabetic ulcer management. Dr Wu performs operations at the Western Hospital (Footscray), Williamstown Hospital, Western Private Hospital (Footscray), The Epworth Eastern in Box Hill, and the Monash Medical Centre (Clayton). He consults at The Elms once a fortnight on Tuesdays.

Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgeon and Urogynaecologist

Dr Gopalan Poovalingam  MBBS, MObGyn, FRANZCOG.

Dr Gopalan Poovalingam

Dr Gopalan Poovalingam is a specialist laparoscopic (keyhole) Gynaecological Surgeon and urogynaecologist who has been consulting at The Elms since May 2018. He completed his undergraduate medical qualifications at the University of Malaya in Malaysia, followed by further training to achieve the Master of Obstetrics and Gynaecology degree. Dr Poovalingam is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and has a particular interest in urogynaecology, minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, and pelvic reconstructive surgery. He manages conditions such as pelvic prolapse, endometriosis, bladder continence problems, uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, heavy and painful menstrual cycles, ovarian disease and infertility. Dr Poovalingam operates at the Western Private Hospital (Footscray), St Vincent's Private Hospital in Werribee, and John Fawkner Private Hospital in Coburg. He consults at The Elms once a month on Friday afternoons.
